Strep throat and an itchy throat

Itching or a tickling feeling may happen with post-nasal drainage, dry air, irritants or an allergy. Allergic Rhinitis can bring sneezing, a runny nose and itchy eyes, while a Common Cold may add congestion, cough or tiredness. Strep throat more often causes a pronounced sore throat, pain on swallowing, fever and tender neck glands. The presence of an itchy throat does not establish any one diagnosis, and a clinician may need to examine you if symptoms are significant.

Sip water, avoid smoke and strongly scented products, and consider a humidified room if the air feels dry. Notice whether symptoms follow a meal, a place, an animal or seasonal exposure. Do not deliberately re-expose yourself to a suspected trigger. A GP can assess persistent symptoms and discuss Allergy Medication when allergy is suspected. Mouth or throat symptoms after eating a particular food should be discussed with a clinician because Food Allergy can require a different plan.

Get emergency help for sudden throat tightness, trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness or widespread hives after food or another exposure. Arrange medical review for a worsening sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, or symptoms that do not settle. Do not rely on an itchy feeling to judge the seriousness of a reaction.

Ask whether the pattern suggests Allergic Rhinitis, Common Cold or another cause, whether you need a throat test, and which treatment is suitable if House Dust Mite Allergy or Food Allergy is suspected.
