What should you know about strep throat high fever?

Strep throat may cause a sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, red tonsils, and tender swollen glands in the neck. Viral infections can produce overlapping symptoms, so a high temperature alone cannot confirm strep throat. A clinician may examine your throat and use a swab when appropriate.

Notice whether you can drink, pass urine normally, and stay alert. The pattern of symptoms matters: cough, runny nose, mouth ulcers, or hoarseness can point toward another cause, while marked throat pain without those features may warrant assessment for strep throat.

Rest and take frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Wear light clothing, keep the room comfortable, and use fever or pain medicine only as directed for your age and health. Do not combine products that contain the same ingredient.

Arrange a GP Consultation when fever is high or persistent, swallowing is painful, or swollen neck glands accompany the sore throat. If strep throat is confirmed, use Antibiotic Treatment exactly as prescribed and avoid sharing medicine.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, severe weakness, confusion, a stiff neck, a spreading rash, or signs of dehydration. Children who are unusually sleepy, difficult to wake, or drinking very little need prompt medical attention.

Ask whether the fever pattern and throat findings call for a swab, which fluids and medicines are suitable, and what change should trigger another review. Mention every medicine already taken.
