What should you know about strep throat from oral?

Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by streptococcal bacteria. Kissing, sharing drinks or utensils, and face-to-face contact can move saliva or respiratory droplets from one person to another. Oral contact does not prove that someone has strep throat, because viral infections and irritation can cause a similar sore throat.

A sore throat, fever, red or swollen tonsils, and tender swollen glands in the neck can occur with strep throat. Cough and runny nose are less typical. A clinician may examine the throat and use a throat swab when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Avoid kissing and sharing cups, cutlery, toothbrushes, or food while symptoms are active. Wash hands after coughing, sneezing, or touching the mouth, and clean frequently handled surfaces. Drink fluids and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts.
