Strep throat: do you need antibiotics?

Strep throat is a bacterial infection affecting the throat and tonsils. A sore throat, fever, painful swallowing, red or swollen tonsils, and tender neck glands can occur, but these features can overlap with viral infections. A clinician may examine your throat and ask about the pattern of symptoms before deciding whether a throat test is useful.

Antibiotics target bacteria; they do not treat viral sore throats. Taking an unsuitable antibiotic can cause side effects and may make future infections harder to treat. If treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and do not share leftover medicine.

Arrange a GP consultation if the sore throat is severe, symptoms are worsening, or strep throat is suspected. Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing hurts. Ask a pharmacist or clinician which pain-relief option is appropriate for your age, health conditions, and other medicines. Avoid sharing cups, cutlery, toothbrushes, or close face-to-face contact while you are unwell.

Seek urgent medical care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids or saliva, drooling, marked swelling in the throat or neck, confusion, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Arrange prompt assessment for a persistent high fever, a spreading rash, or symptoms that are getting worse rather than settling.

Ask whether your examination suggests strep throat, whether testing is needed, what symptoms should improve first, and what to do if you miss a dose or develop a reaction to treatment.
