Can adults get strep throat?

Strep throat is an infection caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria and can spread through close contact, coughs, or shared items. Adults may have a sudden sore throat, pain when swallowing, fever, red or swollen tonsils, white areas on the tonsils, or tender swollen glands in the neck. Cough, runny nose, or hoarseness can point toward a viral illness instead, but symptoms overlap. A clinician can assess the pattern and use a throat test when needed.

Rest, drink regularly, and avoid sharing drinks or utensils. Wash hands after coughing or sneezing, and replace a toothbrush only if your clinician advises it. Book a GP consultation if symptoms are marked, do not settle, or make swallowing difficult. If strep is confirmed, follow the prescribed antibiotic treatment and complete the course as instructed. Avoid self-treating with someone else’s medicine.

Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have breathing difficulty, develop rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, or become confused or faint. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent fever, dehydration, severe one-sided throat pain, or symptoms that are worsening rather than easing. Urgency depends on the warning signs, not on whether the illness is common in adults.

Ask whether your symptoms need a throat test, whether you should avoid close contact with household members, and when you can resume normal activities. Clarify how to take any prescribed medicine and what change would mean you need another review.
