Strep throat after antibiotics: what to know

Sore throat, fever, or swollen glands can take time to settle, but symptoms that do not improve, return, or become more severe deserve a fresh assessment. The original diagnosis may need checking, another throat problem such as tonsillitis may be present, or the prescribed treatment may need review. A clinician can consider your examination, test results, medicine history, and whether doses were taken as directed.

Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed and do not share leftover medicine or save it for later. Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods if swallowing is uncomfortable. Follow the label for any pain or fever medicine and check with a pharmacist if you take other medicines or have a medical condition. Reduce close contact while you are unwell, wash your hands, and avoid sharing cups or utensils. Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are not settling or return after treatment.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, marked swelling in the mouth or neck, confusion, or signs of dehydration such as very little urine. Arrange prompt medical review for a persistent high fever, worsening one-sided throat pain, a muffled voice, or symptoms that return after finishing antibiotics.

Ask whether your symptoms fit ongoing strep throat, tonsillitis, or another cause; whether a throat test is needed; and how to use any prescribed antibiotic safely. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, which doses you took, and whether anyone close to you is ill.
