What should you know about strep rash in mouth?

A strep infection can present with a red throat, swollen tonsils, or tiny red spots on the roof of the mouth, especially when fever and painful swallowing are also present. People may describe these changes as a rash, although sores on the tongue, gums, or inner cheeks are not specific for strep. Viral illnesses, irritation, ulcers, thrush, and a medicine reaction can look different and require different care. A clinician may inspect the mouth and throat and perform a swab before deciding whether antibiotics are appropriate.

Arrange an assessment when mouth changes occur with fever, sore throat, swollen neck glands, or difficulty swallowing. Offer frequent sips of fluid and choose soft, non-spicy foods if swallowing hurts. Avoid smoking, alcohol-containing mouthwashes, and picking at spots. Do not share eating utensils or drinks during a suspected infectious illness. Note the location, colour, pain, fever, and any new medicine. Mouth irritation can also occur with Contact Dermatitis, Drug Rash, or other skin conditions, but those labels cannot be confirmed from a description alone.

Get urgent help for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, one-sided throat swelling, severe dehydration, rapidly increasing tongue or lip swelling, or widespread blistering. A child who is difficult to wake, cannot drink, or is passing very little urine needs prompt medical attention. Seek same-day advice for severe mouth pain, persistent fever, or sores that prevent eating, because these findings need examination rather than home treatment alone.
