Strep on one side of the throat

Inflammation of one tonsil, nearby glands, or the throat lining can make pain feel concentrated on one side. [Strep Throat](/conditions/strep-throat/) may include fever, swollen glands, and pain when swallowing, but symptoms do not identify the cause by themselves. [Tonsillitis](/conditions/tonsillitis/) and irritation from a local injury can feel similar.

A collection of infection beside a tonsil can cause rapidly worsening one-sided pain, a muffled voice, difficulty opening the mouth, or the sensation that the throat is crowded. This needs prompt clinical assessment rather than home treatment alone.
