How to care for brittle nails

Frequent hand washing, prolonged soaking, detergents, acetone, picking, and filing in both directions can separate layers of the nail plate. Repeated impact or manicures may add trauma. One thickened, yellow, crumbly nail can fit Nail Fungus, while pain, swelling, or drainage may signal inflammation around the nail. Several affected nails or a sudden change deserves a broader review.

Keep nails at a comfortable short length and smooth rough edges with gentle one-way filing. Wear gloves for cleaning and wet work, dry hands carefully, and apply moisturiser or a protective ointment to nails and cuticles. Avoid cutting cuticles, biting, peeling polish, and frequent acetone use. Do not start supplements or antifungal medicine without discussing the cause with a clinician.

Arrange a medical review for persistent splitting, changes in nail colour or thickness, a nail lifting from its bed, or repeated pain around the nail. Seek prompt care for pus, spreading redness, severe swelling, or fever. A clinician can examine the nail and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
