Streaks of blood in vomit during pregnancy

Repeated vomiting can irritate or cause small tears in the lining of the throat or food pipe, leaving red streaks. Blood swallowed from the nose or gums can also appear in vomit. Dark, granular material may represent older blood. Pregnancy-related nausea is a common setting for retching, but the amount, colour, recurrence, pain, dizziness, and ability to keep fluids down matter. Oesophageal cancer and stomach cancer can involve vomiting blood, yet a streak is not enough to identify either condition and other causes are more common.

Contact your maternity team, urgent-care service, or doctor the same day for advice, even if the blood appears as a small streak. Note its colour and amount, how often you vomited, and whether you have abdominal or chest pain. Take small sips of fluid if you can keep them down, and do not start medicines for vomiting or acid symptoms without checking pregnancy safety. Mention any medicines that can increase bleeding.

Go to emergency care for more than a small streak, repeated blood, coffee-ground vomit, black stool, faintness, confusion, a fast heartbeat, severe pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek immediate help if you feel weak or dehydrated. These signs can indicate bleeding or serious fluid loss and need examination.

Ask whether you need blood tests, fluids, or an examination of the throat and stomach, and which anti-sickness treatments are suitable in pregnancy. Ask how to recognise dehydration, what to do if blood returns, and whether another source such as the nose or gums should be checked.
