What should you know about strawberry allergy rash?

An allergic reaction may produce raised, itchy welts, flushing, or swelling around the lips and face. Skin contact with strawberry juice can instead irritate the area around the mouth, especially in a child. A rash can also have another cause, including [Contact Dermatitis](/conditions/contact-dermatitis/), [Atopic Dermatitis](/conditions/atopic-dermatitis/), or an infection, so the rash alone cannot confirm an allergy.

Stop eating the suspected food and gently rinse skin that contacted it. Record the food form, amount, timing, symptoms, and any other ingredients eaten, then arrange medical assessment before deliberately trying it again. Follow an existing allergy action plan exactly. Do not apply unfamiliar products to the rash, and ask a pharmacist about symptom relief that fits the person's age and medicines.

Call emergency services immediately for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, tongue swelling, repeated vomiting, dizziness, collapse, or symptoms affecting more than one body system. Widespread hives with swelling can progress quickly. A rash limited to a small area still warrants advice if it recurs after strawberries or is accompanied by facial swelling.
