What should you know about strapping a wrist with kinesiology tape?

Short answer
Kinesiology tape may provide light wrist support and movement awareness, but correct application depends on the injury and should not replace assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the tape can and cannot do
Kinesiology tape is a stretchy adhesive material placed on the skin. A wrist application may give a reminder to limit irritating movement and may make the area feel supported during light activity. It does not set a fracture, repair a torn ligament or remove the underlying cause of pain. A rigid splint or another treatment may be more appropriate for some injuries.
The best direction, tension and shape depend on whether pain involves a tendon, joint, ligament or nerve. Applying tape over broken, irritated or infected skin can worsen the skin problem.
Safer application
Have a physiotherapist demonstrate the pattern for your wrist problem. Clean and dry intact skin, round sharp tape corners and apply without excessive pull. Check the fingers after application: they should remain warm, normally coloured and free of tingling. Remove the tape slowly if itching, burning, rash, swelling, numbness or increasing pain develops; avoid covering a wound unless a clinician directs it. Keep the wrist within the activity limits recommended for the injury.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment after a fall or impact if the wrist looks deformed, pain is severe, or you cannot use the hand normally. Get prompt advice for persistent swelling, worsening pain, numbness, weakness, or fingers that become cold, blue or unusually pale. Do not use tape to delay evaluation of a possible fracture.
Questions for your doctor
What structure is causing my wrist symptoms? Is tape suitable, or do I need a brace or imaging? Can you show me the application and tell me how long to wear it? Which signs mean I should remove it or return for review?
