What should you know about strange bumps on skin?

Bumps can be flesh-coloured, red, scaly, fluid-filled, or firm, and they may itch, hurt, burn, or feel completely normal. Small rough bumps on the upper arms or thighs may fit Keratosis Pilaris. Bumps around hairs can occur with Folliculitis, while heat and sweat may trigger Heat Rash. Smooth pale bumps can be Milia; a persistent itchy or purplish rash has other possible explanations, including Lichen Planus. Appearance alone cannot confirm a diagnosis.

Do not pick, pierce, or freeze an unidentified bump at home. Wash gently, keep sweaty areas cool and dry, and pause any new product that stings or seems linked to the change. Photograph the area in good light and note when it began, whether it spreads, and what makes it itch or hurt. A clinician may consider Oral Antihistamine Therapy for itch or Cryotherapy (Lesion Removal) for a selected diagnosed lesion, but treatment depends on the cause.

Arrange a dermatology review for a bump that persists, grows, bleeds, changes colour, becomes painful, or repeatedly returns. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, facial swelling, breathing trouble, or widespread blistering. Urgent symptoms can reflect infection or an allergic reaction and should not be managed by trial-and-error products.

Ask what features support the diagnosis, whether the bump needs testing or monitoring, and which products or activities to avoid. Clarify whether itch relief is suitable and whether any procedure should wait until the lesion is identified.
