What should you know about a strained pectoral muscle in women?

Short answer
A strained pectoral muscle can cause local chest tenderness and pain with arm movement, but new or unexplained chest pain needs careful medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main action
- Pushing and moving the arm across the body
- Possible signs
- Local tenderness, pain with movement, bruising or weakness
Recognising a pectoral strain
The pectoral muscles lie across the front of the chest and help move the arm across the body, push and lift. A strain may follow weight training, a forceful push, a sudden stretch, coughing or repetitive upper-body work. Tenderness is often near the muscle, and discomfort may increase when the arm is raised, pushed forward or brought across the chest. Bruising, swelling or a sudden loss of strength can occur with a more substantial injury.
Breast tissue, the ribs, shoulder and the heart or lungs can also cause pain in the chest area. Being female does not make every chest symptom a muscle strain, so location, triggers and associated symptoms matter.
What you can do
Pause heavy pushing, lifting and upper-body training, but keep gentle pain-free movement. A wrapped cold pack can be used for short periods soon after an injury; later, warmth may ease tightness. Follow medicine label directions and ask a pharmacist about interactions or suitability. Resume activity in stages when daily movements are comfortable, beginning with light resistance and stopping if sharp pain or weakness returns.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for pressure-like chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Arrange prompt assessment for sudden bruising, a chest contour change, marked weakness, persistent pain, or symptoms that began without a clear movement injury.
Questions for your doctor
Does the examination support a pectoral strain? Do I need assessment of the breast, ribs, shoulder or heart and lungs? When can I return to lifting, and would guided rehabilitation reduce the chance of aggravation?
