How to ease sneezing and a runny nose

Sneezing clears the nasal passages when their lining detects irritation. Itching, repeated sneezing and watery discharge commonly occur with Allergic Rhinitis, including reactions to dust mites or pets. A Common Cold can cause similar symptoms, while COVID-19 or Influenza may add fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue or body aches. Sinusitis more often brings blockage and facial pressure. These symptoms overlap, so the pattern and timing matter.

Move away from smoke, perfume, dust, animal dander or cold air if one starts the episode. Wash your face and hands after outdoor exposure, and consider changing clothes before sleep when pollen is a suspected trigger. Saline spray or a rinse can remove mucus; use safe water and clean equipment. A pharmacist can discuss an antihistamine or nasal spray, including how it fits with pregnancy, age and existing medicines. Cover coughs and sneezes and wash hands if infection is possible.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, throat or facial swelling, faintness, severe wheezing or a rapidly worsening reaction. Seek medical advice for severe facial pain, dehydration, confusion, persistent fever, repeated bleeding or symptoms after a head injury. Make an appointment if episodes recur, disturb sleep or continue despite avoiding suspected triggers.
