How to stop itchy eyes

Itchy eyes often come with watering, redness, or a gritty feeling. Allergic conjunctivitis is a common presentation of eye itching and may occur alongside sneezing or a blocked, runny nose from allergic rhinitis. Pollen, house-dust mites, and animal dander can act as triggers. Irritants such as smoke, dust, cosmetics, or contact-lens solutions can also inflame the surface.

Wash your hands before touching your face and pause contact lenses until the eyes feel comfortable. A cool, clean compress can soothe irritation. Avoid rubbing, which can further disturb the eye surface. Keep windows closed during high-pollen periods, wash bedding regularly, and keep pets away from the bedroom if animal exposure is a trigger. A pharmacist can advise on allergy medication or suitable eye drops; do not share drops or use someone else’s prescription.

Get prompt medical advice for eye pain, light sensitivity, marked swelling, thick discharge, an injury, or symptoms affecting one eye after chemical exposure. Seek urgent help for sudden vision loss, severe pain, or swelling of the lips or tongue with breathing difficulty. Persistent itching deserves review if trigger avoidance and simple measures do not help.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergic conjunctivitis, which triggers are worth testing, and whether your contact lenses or products could be contributing. Mention any discharge, visual change, or allergy symptoms elsewhere.
