What should you know about stool fungal culture?

The laboratory places part of the sample in conditions that allow fungi to grow and then examines what develops. A detected organism does not automatically prove that it is causing every digestive symptom, because interpretation depends on the person, the quantity and the clinical setting. A result may be reported as growth detected, no growth detected, or needing further identification. The test is different from a routine stool examination and may be ordered only when a clinician has a specific reason to investigate fungal involvement.

Follow the collection instructions from the clinic or laboratory, use the supplied container and avoid contaminating the sample with urine or water. Tell the clinician about antifungal medicines, antibiotics, immune conditions and recent healthcare treatment, because these details can affect interpretation. Do not start or stop treatment based on a result alone. If a clinically meaningful fungal infection is identified, an oral antifungal treatment may be considered after the clinician reviews suitability, interactions and the likely source.

Contact a clinician promptly for blood in the stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, dehydration, persistent fever or marked weakness. People with reduced immunity should seek advice early when significant diarrhoea or fever develops. A culture result does not replace assessment of urgent symptoms; the clinician may need additional stool tests, blood tests or examination to find the cause.
