Short answer

Stomach swelling and pain may come from gas, constipation, infection, inflammation, or an issue affecting a nearby abdominal organ.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

Stomach swelling and pain may come from gas, constipation, infection, inflammation, or an issue affecting a nearby abdominal organ. The location, timing, severity, and accompanying symptoms help clinicians narrow down the cause. A temporary change after eating may settle, while pain that keeps returning or progressively worsens deserves a medical assessment.

What the symptoms can mean

Swelling may feel like fullness, pressure, or visible enlargement. Gas, constipation, eating quickly, and food intolerance can contribute. Pain high in the abdomen may occur with indigestion, gastritis, acid reflux, or gallstones. Diarrhoea and vomiting can accompany gastroenteritis or food poisoning. Ongoing symptoms with altered bowel habits, weight loss, tiredness, or blood in the stool need assessment because inflammatory or bowel conditions, including coeliac disease, Crohn's disease, or diverticular disease, may need specific testing. These symptoms are not enough to identify one condition on their own.

What you can do now

Note when the swelling and pain began, where it is felt, whether it follows meals, and whether passing stool or gas changes it. Drink fluids in small, regular amounts, choose lighter meals, and avoid alcohol or foods that clearly trigger symptoms. Gentle movement may help gas-related discomfort. Do not take anti-inflammatory painkillers on an empty stomach, particularly if you have indigestion or a history of stomach irritation. Arrange a clinician review if symptoms persist, recur, interfere with eating or sleep, or are accompanied by ongoing vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, or a fever.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help for sudden or severe pain, a hard or very tender abdomen, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black or bloody stools, or a high fever with worsening pain. Get prompt assessment if the abdomen becomes increasingly swollen and you cannot pass stool or gas, or if you have yellowing of the skin or eyes. Pregnancy, recent abdominal surgery, significant injury, or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for seeking advice.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the pattern and location of the pain suggest, whether you need an abdominal examination or tests, and which medicines or foods could be contributing. Tell the clinician about recent travel, sick contacts, bowel changes, menstrual or pregnancy possibility, previous abdominal problems, and every medicine or supplement you use. Ask which symptoms should prompt same-day review and when to return if the discomfort does not settle.

Questions people ask

Can gas cause stomach swelling and pain?

Yes. Trapped gas can cause pressure, bloating, and cramping, often changing after passing gas or stool. Persistent or severe pain needs medical assessment.

When should stomach swelling be checked?

Arrange a review when swelling keeps returning, lasts beyond a short illness, affects eating, or occurs with weight loss, bowel changes, fever, vomiting, or blood in the stool.

What information should I take to an appointment?

Record when symptoms started, their location and severity, recent foods or travel, bowel changes, vomiting or fever, and the medicines or supplements you take.
