Stomach pain under the left breast: what to know

The area includes ribs and muscles, the lower chest, the upper stomach and part of the bowel. Pain that is sore when touched or follows lifting, coughing or a new activity may involve the chest wall. Burning after meals, sour fluid or discomfort when lying down may fit reflux or stomach irritation. Bloating or altered bowel movements can point towards the digestive tract. Pain can also be referred from nearby organs. A location under the breast does not by itself show whether the cause is minor or serious.

Pause strenuous activity and notice whether breathing, movement, meals or touch changes the pain. Sit upright after eating, choose smaller meals and avoid foods that clearly trigger burning. Gentle warmth may soothe a muscular ache. Do not massage a painful area if the pain is deep, severe or unexplained. Record onset, spread, associated symptoms and medicines. Arrange a clinical assessment if the pain is new, recurring or not settling, particularly with heart or lung risk factors.

Call emergency services for pressure, tightness or crushing pain; pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back or shoulder; breathlessness; sweating; faintness; sudden weakness; or blue lips. Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, black or bloody stool, fever with worsening pain, or a rigid abdomen. Do not drive yourself if chest symptoms or faintness are present.

Ask whether the pain seems to arise from the chest wall, digestive tract, heart or lungs. Mention exertion, meals, breathing, touch, injury, pregnancy possibility and relevant medicines. Ask which examination or tests are appropriate and what change should prompt immediate help.
