Stomach pain during ovulation week: what to know

Ovulation discomfort is often felt low in the abdomen, sometimes more on one side, and may settle within a short time. Gas, constipation, urinary irritation, an ovarian cyst or another pelvic condition can feel similar. The timing alone cannot identify the cause. Note whether the pain follows a cycle pattern, shifts sides, follows sex or movement, or comes with bleeding, discharge, nausea or urinary symptoms. Pregnancy is possible around ovulation; if pregnancy could be present, new pain deserves particular care.

Rest, use gentle warmth over the lower abdomen and drink fluids. Light movement may help if the discomfort feels like cramping or trapped wind. Keep a brief record of timing, side, severity and associated symptoms. Follow the label for any suitable pain medicine and check with a pharmacist if you are pregnant, have stomach or kidney problems, or take other medicines. Recurrent pain, pain that interferes with daily activities, or symptoms between periods should be reviewed by a clinician.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, fainting, marked dizziness, heavy vaginal bleeding, a rigid or very tender abdomen, repeated vomiting, shoulder-tip pain, or pain with a possible pregnancy. Arrange prompt medical review for fever, unusual discharge, pain when urinating, pain during sex, or discomfort that keeps returning or does not settle. These features can point to a problem that needs examination rather than cycle tracking alone.
