Stomach pain during a bowel movement

Hard stools, straining and pain that improves after opening your bowels suggest constipation or irritation around the anus. Loose stools with cramps can occur with gastroenteritis or food poisoning. Recurrent pain with bloating and changes in stool pattern can need review for coeliac disease or Crohn's disease. Pain low on the left side with fever may occur with diverticular disease. Burning upper-abdominal pain is less closely tied to passing stool and may fit gastritis or acid reflux.
