Stomach itching in the ninth month of pregnancy: what to know

Late-pregnancy stretching can leave abdominal skin dry, tight and itchy. Red or raised patches may fit eczema, contact dermatitis or hives; product changes, heat and friction can aggravate them. Itching that is intense, widespread or most noticeable at night, particularly without a rash or on the palms and soles, needs maternity review because pregnancy-related liver problems can present this way. Other possibilities include yeast infection, scabies, psoriasis or lichen planus. Your clinician needs the pattern and examination to separate these causes.

Apply a plain fragrance-free moisturiser after bathing and whenever the skin feels dry. Use cool or lukewarm water, pat the skin dry, and choose loose breathable clothing. Stop any newly introduced scented lotion, soap or detergent. Keep fingernails short and place a cool cloth over the area when the urge to scratch is strong. Before taking an antihistamine or applying a medicated cream, check with your obstetric or maternity team so the treatment matches the cause and your pregnancy.

Contact your maternity team the same day for severe itching, itching without a rash, palm or sole involvement, or symptoms that disturb sleep. Get urgent help for reduced fetal movement, yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, fever, blistering, facial swelling or breathing difficulty. Do not wait for a routine postnatal appointment if these signs appear.
