Stomach cramps after food poisoning

Foodborne infection can irritate the stomach and bowel, causing waves of squeezing pain, loose stools, nausea, vomiting, or fever. The bowel may remain sensitive after the main illness improves, and cramps can occur before a bowel movement. Pain that is severe, fixed in one spot, or steadily worsening does not fit simple recovery and deserves prompt review.

Sip water or an oral rehydration drink regularly, especially after diarrhoea or vomiting. Eat small portions of bland foods when able, and avoid alcohol, very fatty meals, and foods that clearly trigger more discomfort. Rest and use gentle warmth on the abdomen if it feels soothing. Oral Rehydration Therapy can help replace fluid and salts; IV Fluid Therapy may be needed when drinking is not possible.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or increasing abdominal pain, faintness, confusion, very little urine, repeated vomiting, blood in stool or vomit, or a high fever. Arrange a clinical review if cramps do not gradually improve, diarrhoea persists, or you cannot keep fluids down. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with significant health conditions can become dehydrated more quickly.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest ongoing infection, dehydration, or another abdominal problem; which fluids and foods are suitable; and which medicines to avoid while you have diarrhoea or vomiting.
