Stomach Ache and Bleeding Between Periods

Bleeding may mean light spotting or a flow that is more like a period. Note whether the pain is low in the abdomen or more widespread, and whether it is one-sided, cramping, constant, or worsening.

Hormonal contraception, a change in contraception, ovulation, or an irregular cycle can cause unexpected bleeding and cramping. Cervical irritation and sexually transmitted infections such as Chlamydia can also cause bleeding between periods, pelvic discomfort, or pain during sex.

Uterine fibroids and Endometrial Polyps can present with bleeding between periods and lower abdominal pressure or cramping. Cervical Dysplasia, Cervical Cancer, and Womb Cancer can also present with abnormal bleeding; these symptoms do not establish that cancer is the cause.

If pregnancy is possible, bleeding and abdominal pain need prompt assessment because pregnancy-related conditions can require urgent treatment. A clinician may ask about pregnancy possibility, contraception, bleeding pattern, discharge, fever, bowel or bladder symptoms, and sexual health. Tests may include a pregnancy test, examination, infection testing, blood tests, or an ultrasound.

Arrange a medical appointment if the bleeding is new, keeps returning, follows sex, or occurs with ongoing stomach or pelvic pain. Record when the bleeding began, how it compares with your usual period, the pain location and severity, medicines and contraception, and any pregnancy possibility.

Use a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible, and tell the clinician the result even if it is negative. Avoid vaginal douching. If you have unusual discharge, fever, or pain during sex, mention these details because they can help guide infection testing and treatment.

Treatment depends on the cause. It may involve changing contraception, treating an infection, monitoring a benign growth, or managing a uterine or cervical condition. Do not start leftover antibiotics or hormone medicine without medical advice.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fainting, marked dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, a very tender or swollen abdomen, fever with feeling seriously unwell, or bleeding and pain when pregnancy is possible. One-sided pain with bleeding is especially important to assess promptly.

If you feel weak, pale, confused, or unable to keep fluids down, do not wait for a routine appointment. Emergency services can advise where to go, particularly if you might be pregnant or the bleeding is increasing.
