Stomach ache and black poop: what it can mean

Black stool that looks sticky or tar-like may contain digested blood from the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. Stomach lining inflammation, a peptic ulcer, or Helicobacter Pylori Infection can be involved. Iron tablets and some dark foods can also change stool colour, but they do not explain every episode of black stool. Pain may feel burning, gnawing, or cramping, and the amount of bleeding cannot be judged by appearance alone.

Arrange urgent medical advice today, especially if the stool is tarry or the pain is ongoing. Tell the clinician about medicines such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, blood thinners, and iron, as well as vomiting, dizziness, and previous ulcers. Do not take extra anti-inflammatory painkillers while waiting. Keep a note of when the colour changed and whether it recurs.

Call emergency services for fainting, severe weakness, confusion, trouble breathing, vomiting blood or material like coffee grounds, severe abdominal pain, or a fast heartbeat. Seek immediate help if black stools continue or you feel light-headed when standing. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint.

Ask whether the stool appearance suggests bleeding, whether you need blood tests or an examination, and which medicines should be paused or continued. Ask how to recognise worsening bleeding and when follow-up is needed.
