What should you know about a Stevens-Johnson skin rash?

Stevens-Johnson syndrome often starts with fever or flu-like symptoms, followed by tender red or dusky patches. Blisters, skin peeling, and raw areas may follow. Sores can involve the mouth, eyes, nose, throat, or genitals. A skin rash alone does not establish the diagnosis: common conditions such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, heat rash, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, intertrigo, and drug rash can look different and need clinical assessment.

Treat this as an emergency if the rash is painful, spreading, blistering, or accompanied by mucosal sores. Bring a list of all medicines and recent changes. Do not apply irritating creams or pop blisters while arranging care. A clinician may need to review medicines, examine the skin and mucosal surfaces, and provide supportive treatment.

Go to emergency care now for breathing or swallowing difficulty, eye pain, mouth sores that prevent drinking, skin peeling, widespread blisters, faintness, or fever with a rapidly worsening rash. These red flags require urgent evaluation regardless of the rash cause.
