Steroids and hiccups: what to know

Hiccups happen when the diaphragm contracts suddenly and the voice box closes. Steroid treatment may influence the nerves that coordinate this reflex, or it may contribute to stomach irritation. Acid reflux and gastritis can produce irritation that feels unrelated at first, particularly if there is burning, sour fluid, nausea or upper abdominal discomfort. Timing matters: hiccups that begin soon after a new medicine or dose change are useful information, but they do not prove that the steroid is the only cause.

Keep taking a prescribed steroid as directed until the prescriber advises otherwise. Make a brief note of dose times, hiccup episodes, meals and sleep disruption. Smaller meals, avoiding fizzy drinks and remaining upright after eating may reduce triggers for some people. Ask a clinician or pharmacist to review the steroid, other medicines and whether acid reflux medication is appropriate. Avoid adding a remedy or changing treatment without checking first.

Arrange medical advice if hiccups last longer than expected, recur frequently, or interfere with eating, drinking or sleeping. Get urgent help for trouble breathing, severe pain, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit, black stools, fainting, confusion or new neurological symptoms. These features can point to a problem that needs prompt assessment.
