Steroid hiccups treatment: what to know

A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm followed by sudden closure of the voice box. Steroids may affect the nerve pathways involved or irritate the stomach in susceptible people. Acid reflux and gastritis can also irritate nearby structures and keep hiccups going, so the steroid may be one contributor rather than the only explanation. A clinician will consider the timing of each dose, other medicines, alcohol or fizzy drinks, and symptoms such as burning discomfort or nausea.

Do not stop a prescribed steroid suddenly or change its dose without speaking with the prescriber. Record when the hiccups began, whether they follow each dose, and whether they interrupt sleep, eating or drinking. Take the medicine exactly as directed, avoid large meals and fizzy drinks if they trigger symptoms, and ask whether acid reflux medication or another adjustment is suitable. Contact a clinician when hiccups continue, repeatedly return, or prevent sleep, food or fluids. Seek urgent help for severe chest or abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools, fainting, new weakness, confusion, or breathing difficulty. These symptoms need assessment rather than home remedies alone.
