What should you know about sterile wound dressing pack?

A pack may contain sterile gauze, swabs, a drape, forceps, gloves, tape, or a pad, although contents vary by product and purpose. The outer package keeps the contents protected until the pack is opened. The sterile field is the inner area that should remain untouched by unclean hands, surfaces, or equipment.

A pack is a set of supplies, not a diagnosis or a complete treatment plan. A clean dressing can protect a wound from friction and outside contamination, while the right wound cleaning method depends on the injury and the instructions given by a clinician. Burns, deep cuts, bites, and surgical wounds may need assessment rather than home dressing alone.

Check the package is sealed, dry, and within its stated use date before opening it. Wash and dry your hands, prepare a clean surface, and open the wrapper without touching the sterile contents. Use each item only as intended, avoid placing sterile items on the bed or floor, and discard anything that becomes contaminated. Secure the final dressing without wrapping so tightly that fingers or nearby skin become cold, pale, numb, or painful.

Dispose of used materials safely and wash your hands afterward. Change the covering according to the care plan, or sooner if it becomes wet, dirty, loose, or saturated. Never reuse items marked for single use.

Arrange medical review for spreading redness, increasing warmth or swelling, worsening pain, pus, unpleasant odour, fever, or a wound that is not closing. Get urgent help for persistent bleeding, a deep or gaping wound, exposed deeper tissue, loss of movement or feeling, or a serious burn.

Ask which pack contents you should use, whether the wound needs cleaning before covering, how often to change the dressing, and how tightly to secure it. Confirm whether you need a review for stitches, a burn, tetanus protection, or a wound that is draining.
