What should you know about sterile field wound dressing?

A sterile field is a prepared area containing supplies that should remain free from contact with unclean surfaces. A clinician may use sterile gloves, dressings, swabs, forceps, or a drape depending on the wound and the procedure. The aim is to keep the dressing materials from transferring dirt or microorganisms to the wound.

Sterility applies to the supplies and the prepared working area; it does not make an existing wound sterile. The dressing may absorb fluid, cushion the area, and keep outside contact away from healing tissue. The exact approach differs for a surgical wound, an open injury, or a burn.

Follow the instructions for how long to leave the dressing in place and whether it may get wet. Wash your hands before and after touching the outer dressing, avoid opening a sterile pack until it is needed, and do not touch the wound-facing surface. Keep pets, dust, and loose clothing away from the area.

Replace a dressing only with the supplies and method recommended for that wound. Do not pour household products into the wound or reuse a dressing that has fallen onto an unclean surface. A dressing that is loose, wet, dirty, or soaked through may need advice about replacement.

Contact a healthcare professional if drainage increases, the dressing repeatedly soaks through, the wound edges separate, or pain, warmth, swelling, or redness is worsening. An unpleasant smell or pus-like fluid also warrants assessment rather than simply adding another layer.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, a deep or extensive burn, fever with marked illness, or new numbness or loss of movement.
