What should you know about statin drugs and rhabdomyolysis?

Rhabdomyolysis happens when damaged muscle fibres release substances into the bloodstream. A statin may contribute, particularly when combined with another medicine or when the body is under strain from illness, dehydration, or unusually intense exercise. Muscle aches alone are not proof of rhabdomyolysis; clinicians may check a blood marker called creatine kinase and assess kidney function.

Possible symptoms include widespread muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, unusual fatigue, and urine that looks tea-coloured or brown. Some people have few early symptoms, so a new or worsening pattern during treatment deserves attention.

Contact the prescriber promptly if you develop new, significant muscle pain or weakness while taking a statin. Give the full list of prescription medicines, supplements, and recent illnesses. Do not restart, stop, or change the dose without clinical advice unless an urgent clinician tells you to do so. Rest from strenuous exercise and drink normally unless you have been given fluid restrictions.

Your clinician may advise pausing the statin while tests are arranged, then decide whether a different dose or medicine is appropriate after the cause is clearer.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or rapidly increasing muscle pain, pronounced weakness, confusion, faintness, dark urine, or passing much less urine. These signs can accompany muscle breakdown or kidney stress and should not be judged by waiting for them to settle.
