Staphylococcal scarlet fever

Scarlet fever can develop with a strep throat infection and may cause a sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands and a fine, rough-feeling rash. Strep Throat is the relevant condition to discuss; the name can be confusing when different bacteria are mentioned.

A rash or sore throat does not identify the cause by itself. A clinician may examine the throat, skin and glands and decide whether testing is appropriate. Children can become unwell quickly, so changes in drinking, alertness and breathing matter.

Arrange medical advice if scarlet fever is suspected, particularly when fever and a widespread rough rash occur together. Encourage fluids, rest and soft foods if swallowing hurts. Do not share cups, towels or utensils, and wash hands regularly.

If a clinician confirms a bacterial throat infection, take Antibiotic Treatment exactly as prescribed and complete the course unless the prescriber changes it. Ask when the person can return to school or work and what to do if vomiting follows a dose.

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, drooling, marked drowsiness, a child who cannot keep fluids down, signs of dehydration, or rapidly worsening illness. Get prompt review if fever persists, the rash becomes painful or blistered, or symptoms fail to improve after prescribed treatment.

Ask whether the illness appears to be strep-related, whether a throat test is needed, how to manage fever and throat pain, when contagion is reduced, and which warning signs require emergency care. Tell the clinician about allergies and recent antibiotics.
