Staphylococcal food poisoning symptoms

Short answer
Staphylococcal food poisoning commonly causes sudden nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea, sometimes with fever.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main symptoms
- Nausea, vomiting, cramps and diarrhoea
- Main risk
- Dehydration from fluid loss
What the symptoms mean
The illness comes from toxins already present in contaminated food; the toxin, rather than an infection spreading through the body, drives many symptoms. Nausea and vomiting may begin abruptly, followed by cramping and loose stools. Read more about Food Poisoning, Abdominal Pain, Diarrhoea, Fever, Nausea and Vomiting.
Symptoms can be unpleasant but often settle as the body clears the toxin. The main concern is fluid loss, especially when vomiting makes drinking difficult. Young children, older adults, pregnant people and anyone with a long-term illness can become dehydrated more quickly.
What to do now
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. If vomiting occurs, pause briefly and restart with smaller sips; avoid alcohol and heavy meals until your stomach settles. Oral Rehydration Therapy can replace water and salts more effectively than plain fluids when losses continue.
Rest, wash hands carefully and avoid preparing food for other people while unwell. A clinician can decide whether you need assessment, testing or treatment. IV Fluid Therapy may be considered when dehydration is significant or fluids cannot stay down.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, very little urine, severe weakness, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, trouble breathing, or repeated vomiting that prevents drinking. Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms are worsening, dehydration is developing, or a vulnerable person is affected.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which symptoms suggest dehydration, how much oral rehydration fluid to take, whether any medicines should be avoided, and when normal food can be resumed. Mention when symptoms began, what you ate, how often you have vomited or passed stool, and any fever.

Questions people ask
Does staphylococcal food poisoning always cause fever?
No. Digestive symptoms may occur without fever, so the absence of fever does not rule it out.
What is the first priority at home?
Replace lost fluids with frequent small sips, using an oral rehydration drink if vomiting or diarrhoea continues.
