What should you know about staph food poisoning?

Short answer

Staph food poisoning happens when food contains toxins made by Staphylococcus bacteria, often causing sudden nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhoea.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens

Some Staphylococcus bacteria can grow in food and produce toxins before the food is eaten. The toxin irritates the digestive system, so symptoms may begin suddenly with nausea, repeated vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhoea. Fever may occur, but it is not required. Because the illness is driven by toxin already present in food, antibiotics do not usually remove the immediate cause. The main concern is loss of fluid and salts through vomiting and diarrhoea. Other infections and illnesses can look similar, so the symptoms, timing, shared meals, and health of other affected people help a clinician assess the situation.

What you can do at home

Rest and take frequent small sips of water or oral rehydration therapy. If vomiting makes drinking difficult, pause briefly and try smaller amounts more often. When appetite returns, choose light foods and avoid alcohol and rich meals until you feel better. Wash hands carefully with soap and water, clean contaminated surfaces, and avoid preparing food for other people while you have vomiting or diarrhoea. Do not use anti-diarrhoeal medicine for a child without advice, and ask a pharmacist before using it if you have fever, blood in the stool, or severe abdominal pain.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, inability to keep fluids down, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty. Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms are intense, persistent, or affect a young child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a significant medical condition. IV fluid therapy may be considered when dehydration is severe or oral fluids cannot be kept down. Do not wait for a diagnosis if you are becoming difficult to wake or unable to drink safely.

Questions to ask

Ask whether the pattern fits food poisoning, how to judge dehydration, which fluids are suitable, whether anyone else who ate the food needs advice, and when you can safely return to work or food preparation. Mention recent travel, medicines, pregnancy, and any blood, fever, or severe pain.

Questions people ask

Do antibiotics treat staph food poisoning?

They do not usually remove toxin already present in food, so treatment commonly focuses on fluids and monitoring for complications.

What if I keep vomiting?

Try tiny frequent sips, but seek medical advice promptly if you cannot keep fluids down or signs of dehydration appear.
