Stages of strep throat

Strep throat is caused by bacteria affecting the throat and tonsils. A [Sore Throat](/symptoms/sore-throat/) and pain when swallowing may appear quickly, together with [Fever](/symptoms/fever/), headache, tiredness, red or swollen tonsils, and tender [Swollen Glands](/symptoms/swollen-glands/) in the neck. Some people develop white patches or fine red spots in the mouth. Cough, runny nose, or hoarseness points more toward a viral illness, but symptoms alone cannot confirm the cause. [Tonsillitis](/conditions/tonsillitis/) can have similar features, so examination and testing may be needed.

Symptoms may be most intense early on and then ease as the infection responds to treatment or the immune system clears it. A clinician considers the full pattern, age, examination findings, and local testing practice rather than using one symptom alone to diagnose strep throat.

A throat swab or other test may be used when appropriate. Drink fluids, choose soft foods, rest, and use symptom relief recommended for your age and health history. Replace or clean items that contact saliva if your clinician advises it.

Get urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat pain, difficulty opening the mouth, or rapidly increasing neck swelling. Seek prompt review if dehydration develops, fever persists, or symptoms worsen after initial improvement. These features can signal a complication or a different condition and should not be judged by the presence or absence of a single throat symptom.
