Stages of Missed Miscarriage

A missed miscarriage can occur without the cramps or bleeding many people associate with miscarriage. It may be suspected when pregnancy symptoms change or discovered during an ultrasound. The clinician may arrange another scan or other checks when the findings are uncertain before confirming the diagnosis. After confirmation, the pregnancy tissue may pass naturally, or you may discuss medical management with medicines or surgical management using a procedure to remove the tissue. The choice depends on your symptoms, clinical findings, preferences and access to follow-up. Emotional responses vary, and grief can be intense even when physical symptoms are limited.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed and what to expect from each management option, including pain relief, bleeding, follow-up and when to seek help. Use sanitary pads if monitoring bleeding helps you judge its amount, and avoid inserting anything into the vagina if your clinician advises this. Accept practical and emotional support from people you trust. Contact your maternity or gynaecology team if you are unsure whether symptoms fit the agreed plan.

Get urgent medical help for heavy bleeding, severe or worsening abdominal pain, faintness, fever, chills, foul-smelling discharge or feeling very unwell. Emergency help is appropriate for collapse, severe weakness or breathing difficulty. Follow-up matters even when bleeding settles, because your clinician may need to confirm that treatment is complete and discuss recovery.
