What should you know about stages of hives?

An episode may begin suddenly, with a few welts or a widespread Skin Rash. The raised areas can enlarge, merge or disappear, then recur during the same episode. Some episodes settle quickly; others continue or return over a longer period. Triggers can include infections, medicines, heat, pressure, food or no identifiable cause. Hives are not the same as a bruise, because their appearance and position can change noticeably.

Angioedema is deeper swelling, often affecting eyelids, lips, hands or feet. It can occur with hives or on its own and may feel tight rather than itchy.

Take photographs and record foods, medicines, illness, heat, exercise and pressure before the rash appeared. Cool compresses and loose clothing may reduce irritation. Avoid scratching, because broken skin can become inflamed. A clinician may recommend Antihistamine Treatment; use it as directed and check before giving a medicine to a child or combining products.

If episodes keep returning, bring the diary and photos to an appointment. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice, even if you wonder whether it triggered the rash.

Call emergency services immediately for hives with swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, faintness, confusion or repeated vomiting. These signs can indicate a severe allergic reaction. Seek same-day advice when swelling is progressing, the rash is accompanied by fever or illness, or a new medicine preceded it. Oral Corticosteroid Treatment may be considered by a clinician in selected situations; it is not a substitute for emergency care.
