What should you know about stage one ovarian cancer?

Stage one indicates that examinations and imaging have not shown spread beyond the ovaries or fallopian tubes. The report may describe whether one or both sides are involved, whether the outer surface is affected and whether cancer cells are present in fluid or washings. These details refine the stage and help estimate the risk of cancer returning, without reducing your diagnosis to a single label.

Symptoms such as bloating, pelvic pressure, altered bowel habits or urinary changes can occur with ovarian cancer, but they are not specific to it. A pelvic ultrasound, surgery and laboratory assessment may all contribute to the diagnosis and staging picture.

Surgery may remove one ovary and fallopian tube or both ovaries and tubes, depending on the tumour, age, fertility wishes and surgical findings. The operation may also include sampling nearby tissues and lymph nodes so the pathologist can check for microscopic spread. Chemotherapy is considered for some stage one tumours, based on the tumour type, grade and surgical findings.

Ask whether genetic assessment, including BRCA genetic testing or genomic tumour profiling, is relevant to you or your relatives. Request a clear plan for wound care, menopause or fertility effects, and follow-up appointments. Palliative care is different from end-of-life care and can support symptoms or wellbeing at any stage when needed.

After diagnosis or surgery, call your care team promptly for fever, increasing abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, heavy bleeding, worsening pain or inability to pass urine. Seek emergency help for fainting, severe breathlessness, sudden severe abdominal pain or uncontrolled bleeding. These warning signs require prompt assessment and should not be explained away as routine recovery.
