What should you know about stage IV prostate cancer?

Spread may involve nearby structures, lymph nodes, bones, or other organs. Your team uses imaging, prostate-specific tests, biopsy information, symptoms, and overall health to understand the pattern. Bone involvement can cause pain or make bones more fragile. Difficulty passing urine may arise from blockage or other urinary problems and should be reported rather than assumed to be caused by cancer.

Treatment may include medicines that reduce cancer’s hormonal drive, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted radioisotope therapy, or treatment aimed at specific painful areas. Bone-strengthening therapy may be considered when cancer affects bone health. Brachytherapy and prostate removal surgery are used only in selected circumstances, while robotic cancer surgery describes a surgical approach rather than a separate cancer type. Your plan may change as the cancer responds or symptoms change.

Tell your team quickly about new or worsening back pain, leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, inability to pass urine, fever during treatment, or pain that suddenly limits movement. These symptoms can need urgent assessment. Emergency help is appropriate for sudden paralysis, severe breathlessness, collapse, or uncontrolled pain.

Ask where the cancer has spread, what the first treatment is meant to do, how bone health will be monitored, what urinary or nerve symptoms matter urgently, and when imaging or blood tests will be reviewed.
