What should you know about stage IV ovarian cancer?

Doctors use scans, tissue findings, and examination to map where the cancer has travelled. The exact sites of spread, the cancer subtype, previous treatment, and your general health all affect the plan. Fluid around the lungs, liver involvement, or disease elsewhere in the body may require different approaches. Genomic tumour profiling and BRCA genetic testing can identify information that helps the team discuss suitable medicines for you.

Your oncology team may discuss chemotherapy, ovarian cancer debulking surgery, or a sequence of both. An oophorectomy may be part of surgery in selected situations. Treatment can aim to shrink or control cancer, ease symptoms, and preserve day-to-day function. Palliative care can be added at any stage to help with pain, nausea, breathlessness, fatigue, nutrition, emotional strain, and family support; it does not mean that active cancer treatment has stopped.

Contact your cancer team promptly for worsening abdominal swelling, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, new breathlessness, severe pain, confusion, or very little urine. Seek emergency help for sudden severe breathing difficulty, fainting, heavy bleeding, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Keep the team’s emergency number accessible and tell them which treatments you are receiving.

Ask where the cancer has spread, what the treatment is intended to achieve, whether tumour profiling or BRCA testing is appropriate, how surgery and chemotherapy would be timed, and which symptoms should trigger an urgent call.
