Stage 4 Stomach Cancer

Stage 4 stomach cancer means cancer cells have reached distant organs, distant lymph nodes, or the lining of the abdomen, depending on the staging findings. Doctors review scans, tissue results, blood tests, nutrition, weight, symptoms, and general fitness to understand the disease and choose treatment.

Tumour testing can identify features such as HER2 or other markers that may open particular treatment options. Loss of appetite, early fullness, nausea, pain, or difficulty swallowing can affect nutrition, but symptoms do not by themselves show how far the cancer has spread.

The oncology team may discuss chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or HER2-targeted therapy when test results and overall health make them suitable. Surgery such as stomach removal is selected carefully and is not appropriate for every stage 4 situation. A dietitian can help with small frequent meals, supplements, swallowing concerns, and maintaining strength. Ask about pain, nausea, bowel changes, and emotional support early.

Seek urgent help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, a swollen painful abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact the cancer team promptly for worsening weakness, reduced urine, fever, or loss of appetite that prevents adequate drinking and nutrition.
