Stage 4 Prostate Cancer Spread to the Liver

Liver metastases mean prostate cancer cells have travelled from the original tumour to the liver. The care team will assess the number and size of lesions, liver function, spread to bones or other organs, tumour grade, previous treatments, and your general strength. Blood tests and imaging help show how the liver is working and whether the cancer is changing.

An individual outlook is more useful than a population figure. It should be discussed using your scans, symptoms, test results, treatment history, and goals. A changing prognosis does not mean that supportive care has stopped; symptom relief and practical support can be provided at every stage.

Ask whether treatment is aimed at controlling the cancer, easing symptoms, protecting liver function, or several goals together. The oncologist may discuss systemic treatment because it can reach cancer cells in different parts of the body. Radiotherapy may help a selected painful or risky site, while targeted radioisotope therapy is relevant only for particular tumour features. Review medicines, alcohol use, nutrition, and other liver conditions with the team before making changes.

Report reduced appetite, nausea, increasing abdominal swelling, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or unusual sleepiness. Loss of function can have several causes, so assessment matters.

Seek urgent medical help for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, new confusion, marked drowsiness, vomiting blood, black stools, sudden breathlessness, or inability to pass urine. Contact the oncology team promptly for rapidly worsening jaundice, swelling, fever, or pain that is not controlled by the prescribed plan.

What do the scans show about the liver and other organs? Are my liver tests changing? Which treatments can reach disease throughout the body? How will treatment response be monitored? Which symptoms should prompt emergency care? Can palliative care, nutrition support, or counselling be added alongside cancer treatment?
