Stage 1 ovarian cancer symptoms

Early ovarian cancer can be silent or present with symptoms that resemble common digestive or menstrual problems. Possible changes include ongoing bloating, pelvic or abdominal discomfort, feeling full quickly, changes in bowel or bladder habits, unusual tiredness, or bleeding after menopause. A symptom can have many explanations; it does not, by itself, show that ovarian cancer is present.

Stage is determined after clinical assessment, imaging, and tissue examination. It describes where confirmed cancer is found, not how severe a symptom feels. Pelvic Ultrasound may help examine the ovaries, but additional tests may be needed to clarify a finding.

Arrange an appointment if abdominal, pelvic, bowel, bladder, appetite, or bleeding changes persist, recur, or differ from your usual pattern. Note timing, relation to meals or periods, weight change, medicines, and family history. A clinician may examine the abdomen and pelvis and arrange imaging or blood tests; these results are interpreted together rather than in isolation.

If ovarian cancer is confirmed, the team may discuss surgery such as Oophorectomy, staging procedures, and whether Chemotherapy is appropriate. Genomic Tumour Profiling or BRCA Genetic Testing may provide information that affects treatment or family counselling.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe abdominal or pelvic pain, repeated vomiting, a swollen abdomen with inability to pass stool or gas, fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, or severe weakness. These signs can have causes other than cancer but need prompt assessment.

For gradual symptoms without emergency signs, book a timely review. Tell the clinician about pregnancy possibility, menopause status, prior ovarian problems, and any family history of ovarian or breast cancer.

Ask: Could another condition explain these symptoms? Which examination or scan is appropriate? If a mass is found, what does it show and what remains uncertain? Do I need referral to a gynaecological oncology team? Should genetic counselling or tumour testing be discussed?
