Stage 0 stomach cancer symptoms: what to know

Stage 0 describes abnormal cells limited to the innermost lining of the stomach. It is sometimes called carcinoma in situ. Because the change is superficial, it may be discovered during an upper endoscopy performed for another reason or after an abnormal finding is investigated.

Symptoms such as indigestion, nausea, early fullness, upper-abdominal discomfort, or loss of appetite can have many causes. A symptom does not establish stomach cancer. Persistent or changing symptoms deserve a clinical review, particularly when eating becomes difficult or you notice unexplained weight change.

Arrange an appointment if digestive symptoms continue, recur, or interfere with meals. A clinician may review medicines, examine your abdomen, and decide whether blood tests, endoscopy, or a tissue sample is appropriate. Ask whether Helicobacter pylori infection should be assessed, since it can affect stomach health.

If stage 0 disease has already been identified, keep the follow-up plan and ask how the abnormal area was sampled or removed. Treatment depends on its exact location, size, appearance, and biopsy findings; some early lesions can be managed through an endoscopic procedure, while others need surgery.

Seek urgent medical help for vomiting blood, black or tar-like stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent vomiting, progressive difficulty swallowing, or a marked loss of appetite.

Ask: How was the stage determined? Was the whole abnormal area removed? Do I need another endoscopy, and when? Should Helicobacter pylori be tested or treated? What symptoms should prompt an earlier call?
