Misoprostol: what to know about its use

Misoprostol changes the cervix and stimulates contractions of the womb. Clinicians may use it in medical management of miscarriage or to help prepare for induction of labour. The expected effects depend on why it is being used and how it is given. Cramping and vaginal bleeding can occur; nausea, diarrhoea, chills, and a raised temperature are also possible.

Use misoprostol only as directed by the maternity or gynaecology team. Confirm the tablet strength, route, timing, and what to do if vomiting occurs. Have access to the contact number provided by your care team and use suitable sanitary protection so bleeding can be observed. Do not take extra doses or share the medicine. Tell the clinician about allergies, previous uterine surgery, and all other medicines.

Contact your care team urgently for very heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, faintness, breathing difficulty, persistent high temperature, or feeling seriously unwell. Emergency help is needed for collapse, severe weakness, or pain that is sudden and extreme.
