Squat University groin pain: what to know

Short answer
Groin pain during or after squatting can reflect overloaded muscles, hip joint irritation, or movement limits, so reduce provoking load and seek assessment when it persists.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible sources
- Adductors, hip joint, or movement-related overload
- Useful observation
- Record the depth, load, timing, and associated clicking or stiffness
Why squats may hurt the groin
The groin includes the inner-thigh adductor muscles and tissues near the front of the hip. A sudden increase in depth, load, training volume, or speed can irritate these structures. Hip impingement may cause pinching with deep flexion, while a labral tear can be associated with catching or clicking. Hip osteoarthritis can produce groin pain with stiffness and reduced movement. These conditions can overlap with muscle strain, so the symptom pattern and examination matter.
Modify training
Temporarily reduce depth, load, speed, or frequency until the movement is more comfortable. Avoid forcing the knees or hips into a painful position, but keep gentle walking and pain-free movement if tolerated. Note whether pain appears during descent, at the bottom, or when standing up, and whether coughing, running, or changing direction affects it. Sports physiotherapy can assess hip mobility, strength, technique, and training progression before guiding a gradual return to squatting.
When to get assessed
Seek prompt care for sudden severe pain, inability to bear weight, a visible bulge, fever, major bruising, or pain after a significant injury. Arrange an evaluation when groin pain persists, repeatedly interrupts training, causes locking or giving way, or is accompanied by hip stiffness. New testicular or abdominal symptoms need urgent medical attention because they are not explained by a simple exercise-related muscle problem.
Questions to ask
Does the pattern suggest an adductor, hip joint, or other source? Which squat variation is appropriate now? Do I need imaging, and how should strength and depth be rebuilt?

Questions people ask
Should I stop all squats if my groin hurts?
Pause painful squats and use easier, pain-free movement while the cause is clarified; a clinician can guide modifications.
Can hip problems present with groin pain?
Yes. Hip impingement, labral tears, and osteoarthritis can present with groin pain, but an examination is needed to distinguish them from muscle irritation.
