What should you know about squamous cell skin cancer ear?

A suspicious area may appear as a rough, scaly, crusted or bleeding patch, a firm bump, or a sore that does not heal. The outer ear has limited soft tissue and contains cartilage, so clinicians assess the lesion’s size, depth, edges and position. A biopsy confirms whether abnormal cells are present and identifies the type.

The plan may include tumour removal surgery when the lesion can be removed safely. Radiotherapy may be discussed when surgery is unsuitable, when the tumour has features that raise concern, or when additional local treatment is needed. Immunotherapy can be considered in selected advanced situations.

Arrange a skin or cancer assessment for a changing, scabbing, tender or bleeding ear lesion. Do not repeatedly pick at it or rely on home creams to judge whether it is improving. Protect the area from sun exposure and keep photographs only as a record; they do not replace examination or biopsy.

Seek prompt care if the lesion grows quickly, causes persistent pain, bleeds repeatedly, affects hearing, or is accompanied by a new lump near the ear or neck. Urgent assessment is appropriate for uncontrolled bleeding, spreading redness with fever, severe swelling or sudden hearing change.

Does this area need a biopsy? How deep or extensive is it? What treatment would preserve the ear’s function and appearance? Will nearby lymph nodes need assessment? How should the skin be checked after treatment?
