Short answer

Sprouts food poisoning is a foodborne illness that may cause diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea, or fever after contaminated sprouts.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Likely symptoms
Diarrhoea, vomiting, cramps, nausea, or fever
First priority
Replace fluids with frequent small sips
Prevention
Cook sprouts thoroughly and wash hands

Why sprouts can be involved

Sprouts grow in warm, moist conditions that can allow germs to multiply. Raw sprouts and lightly cooked sprouts may therefore carry organisms even when they look fresh. Food poisoning can begin with stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, loose stools, or fever; symptoms vary and can lead to dehydration. A symptom such as diarrhoea is a common presentation of food poisoning, but it can also have other causes.

Think back to what you ate and when symptoms began. Keep packaging or leftover food if a public-health or clinical team asks about a possible shared exposure, but do not taste food you suspect is contaminated.

Support recovery

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Resume light foods as tolerated and avoid alcohol while recovering. Wash hands carefully, clean bathroom surfaces, and avoid preparing food for others while you have vomiting or diarrhoea. Cook sprouts thoroughly in future, especially for young children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity. A clinician may recommend oral rehydration therapy; severe dehydration may require IV fluid therapy.

When medical help is needed

Seek urgent care for blood in stool or vomit, severe or localised abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, very little urine, or inability to keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly for persistent vomiting, worsening weakness, high fever, or illness in a vulnerable person. Do not use leftover antibiotics without medical advice.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need testing, how to replace lost fluids, which medicines are suitable, how long to avoid food preparation, and what symptoms should trigger reassessment.

Questions people ask

Can washing raw sprouts make them safe?

Washing may remove some surface contamination but does not reliably remove all germs. Thorough cooking is safer than eating sprouts raw or lightly cooked.

When is dehydration a concern?

Watch for very little urine, dizziness, unusual drowsiness, dry mouth, or inability to keep fluids down, and seek medical advice promptly.
