Spritzing after an episiotomy: what to know

An episiotomy leaves a healing incision in the perineum, the skin between the vaginal opening and anus. Passing urine, movement, and contact with clothing can make this area sting. A clean peri bottle filled with comfortably warm water can rinse urine away and provide brief soothing relief. Spraying is different from scrubbing: the stitches need gentle handling while the tissues close.

Wash your hands, use a clean bottle, and direct a gentle stream over the area while or after urinating. Pat dry from front to back with clean tissue or a soft towel; do not rub. Keep the bottle clean and do not share it. Follow your maternity team’s advice about pain relief, bathing, pads, and keeping the wound dry between rinses. Avoid adding antiseptic, perfume, or essential oils unless prescribed.

Contact your maternity team promptly for worsening pain, spreading redness, increasing swelling, pus, a bad smell, fever, wound separation, or difficulty passing urine. Seek urgent help if you feel very unwell, have heavy bleeding, or develop sudden severe pain.
