Sprained wrist with no swelling: treatment and next steps

Short answer
A sprained wrist can need protection and gradual movement even when swelling is absent.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- A comfortable removable wrist support may help
What no swelling means
Swelling is only one possible response to a wrist injury. A ligament may be stretched or irritated while the skin looks normal. Pain with gripping, turning a key, pushing up from a chair, or moving the wrist in a particular direction can still indicate a soft-tissue injury. A small fracture or tendon problem can also resemble a sprain, so appearance alone cannot identify the cause.
Practical treatment at home
Reduce lifting, twisting, and impact for a short period, while keeping the fingers moving. A comfortable cold pack wrapped in cloth may ease pain; stop if the skin becomes numb or irritated. A removable wrist support can limit provocative movement without forcing the hand into a painful position. As symptoms settle, use easy wrist and forearm movements and increase daily use gradually. A clinician or physiotherapist can tailor this progression; see [Physiotherapy](/treatments/physiotherapy-and-rehabilitation/physiotherapy/) for rehabilitation information.
When assessment matters
Arrange medical assessment if pain is severe, the wrist looks deformed, movement is markedly restricted, or numbness, tingling, unusual coldness, or colour change affects the hand. Seek advice after a fall or direct blow if tenderness remains focused over a bone. Arrange review when symptoms are worsening or are not steadily improving with protection. More information about [Wrist Pain](/symptoms/wrist-pain/) can help you describe the pattern.
Questions to take to an appointment
Ask which movements should be limited, whether imaging is appropriate, and when strengthening can begin. You can also ask whether a [Splinting](/treatments/trauma-and-fracture-care/splinting/) option is suitable and how to check that it is not too tight.

Questions people ask
Can a sprained wrist have no swelling?
Yes. A ligament injury may cause pain and reduced function without obvious swelling.
Should I keep using the wrist?
Use it gently within comfort, but pause lifting, forceful gripping, and painful twisting while it settles.
